After a discussion about the MUCK's layout and the process by which other realms will be integrated into the grid, Viridis made a suggestion that he thought would make things a bit more interesting. After hearing this suggestion and considering it for a while, I have to agree that it could potentially make RP on Chimaera a lot more dynamic and unusual (in a good way).
Now, one of the things that I've been hoping to achieve on Chimaera is a lack of solid canon. While I would like there to be some history to the world itself, there should be very little that new characters who are joining are required to learn before they can join in and RP. I feel this ambiguity idea might be a good solution to make that goal achievable. Basically what it entails is that most areas on Chimaera (but not all) will have a level of ambiguity pertaining to whether they are a part of the original world or are blended with other worlds or alternate dimensions.
For instance, Wilderwood itself could be a blend of several forests from other worlds and other dimensions. That way, the creatures roaming it could have their own history and canon which integrates into their physical surroundings, but at the same time other players would not be restricted to using said canon.
Random example: Say there is a group of centaurs living in a mountain realm, and their canon is that they have always lived there and that certain landmarks have specific significance in their culture. Now, say an alternate dimension of the same (or slightly different) mountain realm with different inhabitants merges with the other, bringing its inhabitants with it. Let's say that these other inhabitants are gypsies, and that their canon is that they have always lived in the mountains, and that the landmarks there also play a role of significance in their culture. When the two merge, there might be certain non-ambiguous areas and landmarks which are associated only with centaurs or only with gypsies, but outside of those areas there would be no solid canon. Potentially, this would be likely to result in a good deal of confusion and conflict between the two groups.
In the main grid it'd make sense that places like the Castle and the town of Aetheris would (at least for the most part) be non-ambiguous, while Wilderwood, the lake, and other 'wild' places would be more ambiguous.
Anyway, that's the gist of it. I'd like to hear you guys' thoughts on it before I decide one way or another. Hopefully that makes sense, feel free to post if you have any questions, concerns, ideas, criticisms, whatev.
