The world of MUCKs is getting smaller. As technology advances and
three-dimensional avatar-filled worlds come increasingly closer to simulating
reality, interest in simple text-based roleplay wanes. MUCKing is far from
obsolete, however--it's an ideal medium for creative people who aren't afraid
of words, ideas, and storytelling, of playing characters who consist of more
than a collection of images and statistics, of exploring concepts and
delving in.
Chimaera MUCK is a place designed to make the MUCKing experience as
painless, versatile, and magical as possible. It's possible to join without
reading a lengthy backstory and familiarizing yourself with a new universe--you
can play without knowing a thing about where you are, as long as you're able to
roll with what others throw your way. You can come for a single session or
develop characters and storylines and build your own worlds. You can easily
create any number of characters, or change your character's species and sex to
suit the scene. You can involve yourself in Chimaera's backstory and puzzles,
or follow your own groove. Basically, Chimaera is meant to be a place where
creative people who have an idea to roleplay--whatever that idea might be--can
come to do it.
Unlike other MUCKs with multiple world settings, Chimaera's settings
blend together, encouraging groups of players to intermingle and stretch the
boundaries of their settings. Rather than impose a slew of rules to preserve a
single type of atmosphere, our attitude is to embrace as many different
atmospheres as possible and trust our players to work together and decide what
the most fun and interesting possibilities are for themselves. Anything
from fantasy to science fiction to post apocalyptic to action-adventure is
welcome on Chimaera.
We do, however, aim to create an atmosphere in which no one feels
left out. Players are encouraged to be welcoming and accomodating to others, to
be patient with those new to MUCKing, to offer encouragement and, when
appropriate, constructive criticism. It should be noted that the emphasis of
such criticism should not be grammatical skill so much as the ability to
provide comprehensible and interesting scenarios with which others can
interact.
On the whole, we hope that, with help from our players, we can make
Chimaera a haven from cliques and elitism, a refreshing change of pace from
complex universes with websites of required reading, and a kaleidoscope of
riches for those seeking inspiration and stimulation. This is a place where you
can find practically anything you want, in any combination.
